Magnet & Paul Giovanni – The Wicker Man (Music On Vinyl 1973/2010)

‘The Wicker Man’ is widely considered to be one of the three best folkhorror movies ever made, and with very good reason. It’s a highly original film that is both beautiful and deeply disturbing. It also has what must be one of the most powerful endings in movie history! The soundtrack to this legendary film was made by Paul Giovanni and Magnet, and totally fits the movie. Here you’ll find folk of different kinds, but most of this music is highly atmosperhic. This applies not at least to gems like the opener ‘Corn Rigs’ and ‘Gentle Johnny’. Especially the latter has a melody to die for, and is probably my favourite song here. Wonderful! On the album are also lighthearted fun songs like ‘The Tinker of Rye’ and ‘The Landlord’s Daughter’. The latter is certainly corny, but I still like it. The second part of the album features several striking songs that are highly orchestrated and dramatic, making this a very dynamic-sounding album. You’ll also hear excerpts from both the film’s protagonist (poor guy) and Lord Summerisle, the latter played by the legendary Christopher Lee (who also sings some parts on the album!). This is a highly enjoyable soundtrack, and a must for both true lovers of folkrock and folkhorror!
